A judge sentenced a man today who wrapped himself in an American flag and jumped over the White House’s fence on Thanksgiving Day 2015.

Judge Christopher R. Cooper sentenced 24-year-old Joseph Caputo to three years of probation with special conditions, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C.

When he scaled the fence, Caputo was undeterred by metal spikes installed that summer to prevent these incidents from occurring. President Obama was inside with his family celebrating the holiday.

The National Capital Planning Commission has since approved a permanent solution to raise the fence’s height from its current perch around 7 feet to 11 feet and 7 inches.

A few days after the incident, Caputo, of Stamford Connecticut, entered a “not guilty” plea in federal court and was released from custody with supervision. His attorney, Steven Seeger, said at the time that Caputo’s act was one of “civil disobedience,” because he carried a rewritten version of the Constitution when he took the leap. Seeger also said that Caputo did not intend to take his life, as Secret Service booking documents alleged.

But in September 2016, Caputo pleaded guilty to a charge of entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds.

The conditions of his probation include staying away from the District and any facilities, sites or people under Secret Service protection, being interviewed by the U.S. Secret Service, and undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, if the Secret Service’s psychologist requests one.
