Expect crowds, transportation boondoggles, street closures, protests, and who knows what other disruptions to regular life. We wouldn’t blame you if you plan to spend this weekend locked inside the house. But whether you want to brave the city in a show of resistance or to forget what is actually happening, there’s almost certainly an event for you. And, if nothing else, there are plenty of specials to be had on booze.
Take your pick between two cabaret shows this Friday. (Photo via Facebook)
FRIDAY, JANUARY 20
CABARET: Take your pick between a cabaret show that benefits Collection Action for Safe Space, and a cabaret show that benefits your wallet (because it’s FREE…). The Solidarity Cabaret will support CASS’s mission to “build a community free from public sexual harassment and assault. (Black Cat, 9 p.m. $12-15). Meanwhile, RESIST: A Counter-Cabaret will feature 16 artists sharing “raw, creative responses to the election.” Organized by feminist punk performance group Tia Nina, the lineup for the “cabaret of resistance” includes Requiem for Bernie, I Felt Like Smashing My Face in a Clear Glass Window, and Trump Steaks. (Logan Fringe Arts Space: Trinidad Theatre, 8 p.m. FREE)
STAGED READING: Experience a staged reading of The Taming, a new play about three women determined to change our rocky political landscape. Those three women include an ultra-conservative, James Madison lover; an ultra-liberal, social media lover; and a beauty pageant contestant. (Third Floor, 8-10 p.m. FREE)
FITNESS CLASSES: Lululemon’s Georgetown location is hosting a series of free fitness classes between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Attend any of the ten classes, ranging from bootcamp run training to meditation. (Lululemon Georgetown, 6 a.m.- 8 p.m. FREE)
TEACH-IN: Politics and Prose’s next teach-in features feminist heavy hitters Rebecca Traister, Fatima Goss Graves, and Jennifer Klein. “We think it’s something pretty special for such authoritative voices to be in an environment where anyone can hear them speak and engage in the conversation,” P&P spokesman Jon Purves tells us. The event is first-come, first-served. (Politics and Prose, 4 p.m., FREE)
NO THANKS CONCERT: In the most D.C. of traditions, punks are organizing a resistance concert at the Black Cat, dubbed No Thanks: A Night of Anti-Fascist Sound Resistance in the Capital of the USA. The show will feature a mix of D.C. rock and hardcore punk groups (Pure Disgust, Free Children of Earth, Priests), nationally known indie artists (Waxahatchee, Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz), famous guitarists (Marc Ribot, Ted Leo), avant-garde jazz musicians (Irreversible Ways Ensemble, Mellow Diamond), and an assortment of other artists and activists from around D.C. Proceeds are going to Casa Ruby. (Black Cat, 6:30 p.m., $20)
JOKES: You can find comic relief around town at five venues that are part of the What a Joke festival. Local comedians Katherine Jessup and Linsay Deming have organized D.C.’s iteration of the nationwide event, which was conceived and organized in the months since the election. Guests can expect comedians from a wide range of backgrounds, but they aren’t regulated to Trump jokes and other political references. (Shows run from January 19-21 at Bier Baron, Songbyrd Music House & Record Cafe, Drafthouse Comedy Theater, Wonderland Ballroom, and Dojo Comedy, $10-$15).
