The lies against D.C. from the Trump camp continue.
The White House’s website now lists policy issues from the new administration, one of which inaccurately characterizes D.C.’s homicide rate.
President Trump’s statement on standing up for law enforcement states: “In our nation’s capital, killings have risen by 50 percent.”
But as Washington Post reporter Mark Berman points out, that’s just wrong. D.C. recently saw a 17 percent decline in homicides—from 162 in 2015 to 135 at the end of last year, according to D.C. police statistics.
And while 2015’s count was the highest number of homicides in D.C. in seven years, it still isn’t a 50 percent increase from the previous year.
Mayor Muriel Bowser and Kevin Donahue, deputy mayor for public safety and justice, touted D.C.’s total crime declines last month during an announcement about police body-worn cameras.
Trump’s statement also notes a need for more law enforcement across the country. Meanwhile, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund states that the U.S. has more than 900,000 officers, “which is the highest figure ever.”
