Did you feel different when you woke up this morning? Like something was … off?
Well, it’s probably because you remembered this:

That’s right, our beloved Bao Bao, the giant panda born in August 2013, shipped off for China on Tuesday. Knowing for months—for the duration of her life, really—that she’d be going still didn’t dull the pain.
More than 118,000 people watched a video of Bao Bao leaving her enclosure at the National Zoo
One person from her D.C. life that she hasn’t parted from yet? Marty Dearie, the giant panda keeper at Smithsonian’s National Zoo who accompanied her on her non-stop 16 hour flight on the Panda Express, a custom FedEx 777F aircraft.

“Bao Bao was a real champion during the flight. All the weeks of training and preparation served her really well,” said Dearie in a zoo statement. “She’s in excellent hands now and I’m glad I get to transition with our Chinese partners and have my ‘goodbye’ in a couple days.”
That’s our Bao Bao. She will be in quarantine for about a month at the Dujiangyan Panda Base, and when she reaches sexual maturity at age 5 or 6, she’ll join the giant panda breeding program.
Anyway, let this be your reminder to find your local Bei Bei and tell him you love him before he too gets shipped off on a Panda Express. He, along with parents Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, are all we’ve got left.
