On Sunday night, four D.C. police officers saved a man from a burning car in Northeast.

Officer Steven Hines captured the two-minute rescue with his body-worn camera, and the Metropolitan Police Department has publicly released the footage.

In the video, Hines is seen approaching the vehicle on the 1500 Block of Bladensburg Road at 10:20 p.m. According to an MPD release, the car struck a pole and its driver was trapped inside.

“I tried to look in it, but there was too much smoke. I couldn’t really see inside the vehicle,” Hines told NBC Washington.

The car’s front door was locked, so Hines broke the driver’s side window. He then helped the man take off his seat belt and pulled him out of the car. At this point, Hines was assisted by three other officers who came from a nearby police station at the end of their shifts.

“Our minds were pretty much on going home. Another couple of minutes, if we hadn’t been there, if Hines hadn’t stumbled across it, it’d be a completely different story,” Officer John Hayes told NBC. Officers Roberto Adams and Jacoby Taylor were also on the scene, according to the release.

The officers checked to make sure no one else was in the car as the man rested nearby on the ground. Police say he was treated at a local hospital and has since been released.
