Staff at a local finance publication are mourning the death of their senior editor.

A bicyclist fatally struck 65-year-old Jane Bennett Clark on Thursday evening near Franklin Square, a couple blocks away from her office at Kiplinger Personal Finance.

The cyclist was traveling southbound on 13th Street NW toward I Street NW when Clark began stepping off the curb in the crosswalk, according to a report from the Metropolitan Police Department. The cyclist then struck Clark, causing her to fall to the ground.

The bicyclist remained on scene, and D.C. Fire and EMS took Clark to a local hospital for treatment, according to D.C. Police. She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead the following day.

Clark’s biography for Kiplinger notes that she covered all facets of retirement and wrote a bi-monthly column “that takes a fresh, sometimes provocative look at ways to approach life after a career.” She also oversaw the company’s rankings for best values in public and private colleges and universities and spearheaded its annual “Best Cities” feature.

Knight A. Kiplinger, the president of Kiplinger’s financial media company, told The Washington Post that Clark was known for “nuanced features on the softer side of personal finance.” Sandra Block, a senior associate editor, said though her topics were pretty complicated, “she had a way of bringing it all to life.” The magazine’s editor, Janet Bodnar, described her as a “beautiful wordsmith.”

Two of her latest posts include 6 Steps to Retire When You Want and 6 Reasons to Work Past Retirement Age.

Clark began working at Kiplinger in 1977, then left for few years in the 1980s to raise her family and returned, according to The Post. She had three children and one grandchild.

This is the city’s sixth traffic fatality this year, according to MPD data. No charges have been filed yet, though the case is still under investigation
