Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer embarks on the next stage of her political career in the new trailer for season six of Veep, and naturally she’s seeking her retribution. (If you aren’t caught up, now would be the time to stop reading to avoid spoilers.)
When we last saw Meyer, it was to witness her crushing and straight up humiliating defeat at the hands of Tom James (Hugh Laurie), which effectively ended her brief stint as interim President.
The trailer opens with Meyer on a talk show: “The loss hurt, but I did take this opportunity to reacquaint myself with an old friend of mine,” she says with an alarming level of artificial enthusiasm. “By the name of Selina Meyer.”
In classic Veep fashion, the pleasantries, if you can even call them that, are brief. The rest of the trailer runs rampant with the show’s signature acerbic wit. “I will destroy you in ways that are so creative, they will honor me for it at the Kennedy Center,” says a livid Meyer to newly-minted congressman Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons). What’s Veep without a casual call to violence?

Meyer takes on what are sure to be ill-advised attempts at spreading democracy and good will across the globe, joined as always by her doting long-suffering assistant Gary (Tony Hale) as well as the hilariously inept Mike (Matt Walsh), who Selina refers to as “the world’s least-f—d geisha” in response to his faulty sunscreen application.
Veep returns after winning the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for the second year in a row while Louis-Dreyfus took home her fifth-consecutive Emmy for her portrayal of Selena.
Dive back into the deceitful world of modern politics with the season 6 premiere on April 16 at 10:30 p.m. on HBO, if you can bear it.
