Vandals spray-painted anti-Semitic graffiti at the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia and the Little River United Church of Christ in Fairfax.
JCC officials found the graffiti outside of the center this morning, said Executive Director Jeff Dannick at a news conference. Fairfax Police say the facility was vandalized between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m.
The markings at the center included “Hitler was right,” a swastika, and an “SS” symbol, NBC Washington reports. Dannick said the graffiti has been covered up “in effort to try and curtail the sharing of these awful symbols and this awful hate speech.” He said they will work to wash the messages this afternoon “to make sure that nobody has to see this symbolism again.”
Following a rash of anti-Semitic and other bigoted vandalism since the presidential election, the JCC of Greater Washington in Rockville was targeted last month in a round of bomb threats against Jewish organizations around the country. There have been at least six waves of such threats, which have affected Jewish schools and centers across the country.
“As painful as this is, it’s even more painful to happen on Passover,” Dannick said, before adding that no one was in the building at the time of the vandalism and “there was no danger here—the facility remained secure.”
Among other damage at the church, the suspect spray-painted over a sign that says “Honor God, Say NO to anti-Muslim bigotry.”
Police said they are investigating both cases and reviewing surveillance footage to identify a suspect. “I feel like we’re in excellent hands here and we’ll get to the bottom of this,” Dannick said.
