A man has been charged in connection to the death of a woman who was fatally struck by a bicycle in Franklin Square last month.
The cyclist, 27-year-old Zakkai Stanley Kauffman-Rogoff, was issued a citation for disobeying a traffic control device, according to D.C. Police spokesperson Karimah Bilal.
Kauffman-Rogoff’s attorney told the Washington Post that his client “denies culpability in this unfortunate event, and that he has cooperated and will continue to cooperate with the investigation.”
The incident took place on March 9 when Jane Bennett Clark stepped off a curb and was hit just a few blocks away from her office at Kiplinger Personal Finance, according to a report from the Metropolitan Police Department.
D.C. Fire and EMS took Clark to a local hospital for treatment, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead the following day. Police said Kauffman-Rogoff stayed on the scene.
Clark’s co-workers remembered their senior editor as “a beautiful wordsmith” who could bring to life stories about finances that would typically be considered complicated.
The case is still under investigation and police are working with the U.S. Attorney’s office to decided if “any criminal charges may be warranted,” Bilal said.
