Police say a man has died after being hit by a car early Thursday morning near the U Street Corridor.
The crash happened around 2 a.m. when the driver of a silver Volkswagon Golf pulled away from the curb in the 2100 block of 8th Street NW, according to a release from the Metropolitan Police Department.
Police say the driver “realized he struck something,” looked behind his car, and noticed a person lying in the street. He called 911 and remained on the scene.
The pedestrian has been identified as 33-year-old Clinton Norman. Police identified Norman as being from Brooklyn, though according to his Facebook page, he lived in D.C.
Fire officials took Norman to a nearby hospital in critical condition and he died today from his injuries.
There were nine pedestrian deaths last year—part of 28 overall traffic fatalities, according to a recent Vision Zero progress report from the D.C. Department of Transportation.
D.C. has seen five pedestrian deaths out of nine traffic fatalities so far in 2017 compared to six this time last year, according to MPD data.
No charges have been filed in this case, which is still under investigation.
