Roxane Gay is working on a TV pilot for Amazon, the celebrated feminist author announced at a talk organized by the D.C. Public Library last night.
Gay was in town to promote Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, and she had a conversation with WAMU’s editorial director Alicia Montgomery at All Souls Unitarian Church.
“It hasn’t been announced…” Gay said to cheers, after an audience member asked about her television writing experiences and plans. “But I’m writing a TV series for Amazon.”
Gay said the show is set to be titled “Grown Women,” and will be based on her own writings. It is being produced by Common, the rapper and film producer.
The free event sold out, with lines snaking around the block, stretching down 15th Street. More than 200 people were turned away after the venue reached full capacity.
“We thought this was going to be an author event. It turned into a rock concert,” said D.C. Public Library Executive Director Richard Reyes-Gavilan, in introducing Gay (who was greeted with a standing ovation before she even started speaking).
“I’ve been doing author programs for 25 years,” he tweeted. “And never seen anything like [the Roxane Gay] reception tonight.”
