Wawa is the convenience store that has launched a thousand think pieces. And, it turns out, it’s launching some convenience stores, too.
The Pennsylvania-based chain announced today that its second outpost will be in Georgetown, on the corner of Wisconsin Ave. and Prospect St. NW. They’re planning on having the store open by the end of 2018.
Wawa’s first store in D.C. will be located downtown, at 1111 19th Street NW, and, with 9,200 square feet, it’ll be their largest venue to-date when it opens at the end of 2017.
The expansion into the District will be much bigger than these two spots, though. At an event in mid-June, Wawa CEO Chris Gheysens said that the company is aiming for 5-10 stores within two years, 10-20 stores within five years, and a total of 30-50 stores in total.
And that’s just inside the city. The company is also planning on opening new stores in Virginia and Maryland, as well as other states. Currently, it has 757 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida.
Unlike the Wawas of your childhood, the vast majority of the outposts in D.C. will not sell gas. Instead, they’ll open what they’re calling the “Urban Model,” which focuses on food and drink offerings. Those stores employ nearly 100 full- and part-time workers, per the company.
