Town Danceboutique is closing on July 1, 2018, the popular gay club announced on Tuesday night.
“It has been our privilege to own and operate Town,” the announcement says. “We are most proud to be the place many people first felt comfortable being who they are and the place many in our community felt the most safe expressing themselves.”
A little more than a year ago, Jefferson Apartment Group bought the building that houses Town as part of a four parcel purchase in Shaw, spurring rumors that the decade-old club would close.
In late May 2016, Town dispelled the rumors. “This sale was not a surprise to us and we have a great relationship with our new landlord who is excited to have us as their tenant. We also enjoy solid lease terms and we intend and fully expect to be throwing parties in our current location for years to come,” the club said in an email to DCist.
Now, Town says that the property will be turned into an apartment complex. We’ve reached out to Jefferson Apartment Group for comment, and will update when we hear back.
Before it closes, the club promises “a multitude of remarkable events to help Town go out in the same manner in which it arrived.”
