D.C. police have arrested an 18-year-old driver who they say intentionally struck a transgender woman in Northeast, then fled the scene on July 5.

The incident happened blocks from the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro station around 3:18 a.m., according to a release from the Metropolitan Police Department. Police responded to the scene after receiving a report of a traffic accident involving a pedestrian.

Police did not release the woman’s name in the release, however, friends and LGBT advocates who know the woman identified her as Boo Boo Washington, according to the Washington Blade.

Investigators found that the driver of a dark-colored car intentionally struck Washington and left the area, hitting a parked car during his escape, according to a police report.

Washington was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Police arrested Startwaune Anderson in relation to the incident on July 12 and charged him with aggravated assault while armed.

Captain Anthony Haythe, acting commander of MPD’s homicide branch, told reporters at a press conference that he cannot say at this point if the incident is a hate crime, according to the Blade. “But we have not ruled that out and we are still investigating it,” he said.

The hit and run took place three days after another transgender woman, Desiree Copeland, was attacked in Southwest. The day after Copeland’s attack, a volunteer from Collective Action for Safe Spaces set up a crowdfunding page to raise $2,000 for her—203 donors have since raised more than $5,500.
