This week’s food events
Get your tiki on
July through August is Tiki Time in D.C. and Virginia. Truxton Inn (251 Florida Ave. NW), D.C.’s hotel-bar-without-a-hotel, has decked itself out in Polynesian-themed decor and is boasting a selection of Mai Tais and Pago Pagos, replete with rum, chartreuse, and creme de cacao, for your enjoyment. Farther afield, Trummer’s on Main (7134 Main St. Clifton, VA) is serving up odes to Polynesia, such as Huli Huli Chicken sliders and sweet and sour goat and spam to go along with their similarly themed bar menu.
Free ice cream!
It’s time to grab some free ice cream to cool down. On Saturday, July 15, Union Market (1309 5th St. NE) is hosting the annual DC Scoop event, where vendors from throughout the city put up their best free scoops in an attempt to win the coveted title of “Best Ice Cream,” as voted by the attendees. The event runs from 1 p.m. to 4 pm and the ice cream is, of course, free.
Celebrate the best of Belgium
It’s Belgian Week in D.C., so look for the return of the mussel and beer fest at Eastern Market’s North Hall (225 7th St. SE). Stop by Saturday, July 15 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. for an array of mussels, frites, and Belgian beer. Admission is free, but beers and food are $6 each.
Trivia fit for a king
The highly-anticipated new season of Game of Thrones premieres this weekend, and you can test your knowledge next Tuesday, July 18 during a special bar trivia. It’s happening at Ventnor Sports Cafe (2411 18th St. NW) at 8:30 p.m. with themed food, like Dragon Wings and Chicken Littlefingers, and drink specials.
Italian breakfast option in CityCenter
Italian restaurant and market Centrolina (974 Palmer Alley. NW) has launched a new morning breakfast menu in its market. Dishes include lox on multigrain bread, a PB&J-and-bannana sandwich on a buckwheat pancake, egg on brioche, and sweet riso (pearled barley, oatmeal, milk, brown sugar). Prices range from $9 to $13. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays, when orders are to-go only.
Openings
The Dolcezza pop-up is reopening at the Hirshorn (Independence Ave. SW) this week and is celebrating both its reopening and National Ice Cream Day with $1 scoops of gelato. The pop-up is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and offers a 10% discount to federal employees and Hirshorn members. Don’t forget your ID!

The Source by Wolfgang Puck (575 Pennsylvania Ave. NW) is going whole hog with a massive outdoor pig roast from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 29. Tickets are $50, inclusive of all the hot and numbing pork sausage you can eat and 3 Stars beer you can drink. The event’s full menu can be found here.
