The flyers of Michelangelo’s David with the text “Our Future Belongs To Us” and “Our Destiny Is Ours” might seem innocuous, but a Neo-Nazi group is crowing over placing them around downtown D.C.
Identity Evropa, designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a white nationalist hate group, called Monday a “successful evening” for hanging its flyers around the District.
The group, which founder Nathan Damigo says has about 300 members, specializes in plastering its posters across college campuses, and now, U.S. cities like Seattle and D.C.
As users on Twitter noted, the statue of David depicts a Jewish king—Damigo says that Jews are not welcome as members of Identity Evropa. Already, some of the posters are not faring so well. While one person already ripped one down, another person said that they look forward to doing so “with glee.”
It’s not the first time in recent memory that District streets have been host to bigoted flyers. There’s also been a spate of nooses appearing in and around D.C.
Fake flyers claiming to be from Immigration and Customs Enforcement that were hung in different D.C. neighborhoods in June led to calls from Mayor Muriel Bowser to “Tear it down!”
Later in June, Bloomingdale was blanketed in anti-immigration and white supremacist flyers associated with Vanguard America, a group that has also put up flyers at University of Maryland.
D.C.’s law allows people to “affix a sign, advertisement, or poster to any public lamppost or appurtenances of a lamppost” as long as it follows certain regulations: they cannot be hung on trees, “no poster or placard shall be publicly displayed or exhibited if it is lewd, indecent, or vulgar, or if it pictorially represents the commission of or the attempt to commit any crime,” and the posters must be dated and removed after 180 days.
