If you need a job as soon as possible, you might not want to apply in D.C., according to a new report.
Glassdoor found that people in the District have the slowest hiring processes compared to job seekers in other cities across the country. Researchers at the company say it takes 33.2 days on average to land a gig in the District. The average nationwide is 23.8 days.
The data comes from nearly 84,000 interview reviews shared on the job and hiring site by people between January 1, 2017 to June 13, 2017.
Researchers say hiring in D.C. is slowest mainly because the city has so many federal government jobs—the industry with the longest interview process at 53.8 days.
“Job candidates could undergo several extra steps that lengthen the overall interview process, including additional written and verbal exams or background checks to secure various levels of security clearances, among other requirements,” said Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor’s chief economist, in a release.
Countrywide, getting hired as a college professor takes the longest, with an average wait of 60.3 days. Meanwhile, it only takes about 10 days to get a job at a restaurant or bar—the shortest industry for hiring in the country, according the report.
On a global scale, there are people waiting longer to get hired than Washingtonians. Brazil, France, and Switzerland, which average 39.6, 38.9, and 37.6 days, respectively, top the list for slowest wait times for jobs.
Chamberlain says that “the more regulatory hurdles companies face within their local labor markets, the more difficult it will be to hire — and fire — employees, directly impacting how long it takes to fill open roles.” D.C. comes in at sixth compared to the 25 countries that are ranked.
For job seekers in the U.S. who want to be hired the fastest, their best bet is moving to Kansas City where the average wait time to get employed is a little over two weeks. India has an even shorter wait time, making it the fastest place to get hired among all of the countries in the report.
