It’s been a long few weeks, so kick back and hit up an artsy block party, drink in a giant snow globe, and, what the heck, ruin your childhood (or make it much more interesting) with some scandalous dance performances.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 18
COMEDY: It’s been a long week, so if you’re in need of a good belly laugh, head to Capital Laughs for the General Shaw’s Chicken Comedy Showcase. Their top-notch local comics are sure to give you some relief (be sure to also check out their free weekday shows!) (Shaw’s Tavern, 8 p.m. $10)
LGBTQ HISTORY FILM: Part of the LGBTQ film series Reel Affirmations, The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson traces the events following the death of the indomitable, self-described “street queen” of New York’s Christopher Street. When Johnson was found floating in the Hudson River in 1992, the NYPD called her death a suicide and refused to investigate, even as protests erupted. The film examines the life of this extraordinary activist who fought arrests and police brutality, organized street kids, battled the intolerant majority within the gay community, and helped spearhead the Stonewall Riots. It’s vital and fascinating history! (HRC Equality Center, 7p.m. $12)
LIFE-SIZE SNOW GLOBE PARTY: Does the D.C. heat and humidity have you down? Have you already forgotten the horror that was the Snowpocalypse? Lovely, then you can drink underneath snow in Washington’s newest special events venue, a geodesic structure called Harbor Dome that’s being unveiled Friday. Enjoy DJs, cocktails, and live music under falling snow in the massive, cooled dome. The Summer Snow Globe, going all weekend, is designed to make you forget it is a very swampy August. (Harbor Dome at National Harbor, 5 p.m. $10-$25)
SEX AND VIOLINS: DC Weirdo Show is baaack and they’ve got pasties and violins, which are a truly sublime combination. A motley crew of sexy weirdos wield their musical skills in an eclectic jukebox of comedy, burlesque, boylesque, kinklesque, sideshow, and drag…phew. And yes, before you ask, there will actually be a violinist, Queen Weirdo Dr. Torcher as Sia on Violin. (The Bier Baron Tavern, 9 p.m. $15)
AFRO-CARIBBEAN RAVE: The Inception is a rave-inspired party–with an African and Caribbean twist. Afro Soca Love is a collective that works to strengthen the connection between African and Caribbean Carnival cultures through the arts, and this is one of their latest events. There will be DJ’s, there will be drinking, there will be dancing, there will be lots of love. (Howard Theatre, 11 p.m. $12-30)
More: Concert by the river, Viva la Causa film screening, free food market, Equilibrium: Fanny Sanin, and Beat the Heat market

SATURDAY, AUGUST 19
CRAFT: Make your boring afternoon a sweet bric-a-brac bedazzled Crafternoon! Ok, I’m not sure if they’ll have crystals or bric-a-brac but you will get to make a simple project that you can take home with you. If you’re not the “crafty type,” this is a great way to jump in and discover the brain-soothing magic of crafting. All supplies are provided, and there will be light refreshment available as well. (The Potter’s House, 1 p.m. $35)
AFROFUTURISM: The gallery show Black Magic: AfroPasts/AfroFutures is an exploration of Magical Realism and Afrofuturism as more than aesthetics, but as connection to shared ancestral histories and futures. The artists also explore technologies aimed at survival in the modern world. (Honfleur Gallery, 5 p.m. FREE)
BLOCK PARTY: We love block parties, and this is going to be a good one. The BLOCK is HOT is hosted by No Kings Collective, Rock Creek Social Club, and Broccoli City, featuring sounds by Jerome Baker III and Domo, as well as food and drinks and an art installation by the Collective. They’re hosting a pop up shop, so cop your “Work it Gurl” prints before they’re gone! (The Lot at The Liz, 5 p.m. FREE with reservation)
VAUDEVILLE: Brainy Girl Follies is hosting their Finale Show, an homage to the speakeasies and play houses of the roaring twenties that includes gilded age vibes and specialty drinks. The celebration of vaudeville’s heyday will include comedy, burlesque, magic, music, games, giveaways, and so much more! (The Bier Baron Tavern, 7 p.m. $12 – $15)
CHILDHOOD-RUINING BURLESQUE: Growing up, life was pretty simple, punctuated by innocent shows like Disney, Rugrats, Hey Arnold, and PowerPuff Girls. Now the burlesque babes of Manic Pixie Nightmares want to reveal the dark, sexy, and disturbing themes hinted at in your favorite pieces of pop culture and yes, Ruin Your Childhood! Mwahaha. Seriously though, this is going to be a really fun and ridiculous show. (The Town Tavern, 5 p.m. $9)
REMEMBER A LOCAL LEGEND: Pay respects to graffiti artist Danny Hogg, better known as “Cool Disco Dan” after his sudden passing last month. Friends, family, and fans will gather to celebrate his life and legacy at the 9:30 Club. “We have a couple of tricks up our sleeve that will make Danny really happy and cement his legacy well,” Roger Gastman, a friend of Hogg’s who co-directed the film The Legend of Cool “Disco” Dan, tells DCist. (9:30 Club, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., FREE)

COLOR ON THE MUSEUM WALLS: Celebrating the 150th birthday of Frank Lloyd Wright, Wright on the Walls transforms a gallery into an interactive, large-scale “coloring book” inspired by the prolific architect’s work. Local artists Scott Clowney and Vlad Zabavskiy adapted images and architectural plans to create wall-size line drawings of Frank Lloyd Wright’s buildings, including homes, houses of worship, iconic windows, building ornaments and more–which you get to color in! (National Building Museum, 10 a.m. FREE)
POETRY: Head to Busboys to experience a Sunday Kind of Love with multitalented poets Alan King and Zahara Heckscher. (14th Street Busboys and Poets, 5 p.m. $5)
PSYCHEDELICS: Uptown Art House is hosting a variety of amazing shows happening in the coming weeks, including Psychedelics + Art co-hosted by the D.C. Psychedelic Society. Local artists will speak about how psychedelics have impacted their art and life, and there will be live painting, live projection, vending, and more. Groovy! (Uptown Art House, 6 p.m., donations encouraged)
BEER WEEK KICKOFF: The DC Brewers’ Guild kicks off their 9th annual DC Beer Week, an eight-day festival that celebrates Washington’s burgeoning craft beer community. Prost! Throughout the week, local breweries, restaurants, bars and other community partners around the District are hosting tastings, educational seminars such as “home brewing for beginners” and “the women pioneers of craft beer and cider”, and much more! (Various, 9 a.m. FREE)
