Police arrested a man on Tuesday after receiving a report of a suspicious package on the Rotunda steps at the Capitol. The incident happened not long before officials shut down the White House to investigate another suspicious item.
The package, which was a backpack, belonged to the man, according to U.S. Capitol Police spokesperson Eva Malecki. Capitol police arrested him around noon and charged him with unlawful entry. The package was cleared with negative results around 1:10 p.m.
Just minutes after the scene at the Capitol concluded, officials responded to an “unattended package” that was spotted near the White House along Pennsylvania Avenue and Lafayette Square.
Secret Service and D.C. Police locked down the White House and shut down pedestrian traffic to investigate. They said the package was cleared about an hour later.
