While D.C. restaurants have pledged to donate profits to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts and the Humane Rescue Alliance is calling for residents to help clear the shelters to make room for displaced animals, the Capital Area Food Bank is sending two truckloads of supplies.

“The devastation to the homes and lives of families in Texas requires an immediate response from those of us with logistical capabilities,” said CAFB COO Jody Tick in a statement. “The food bank is proud to be using its resources to deliver something so important.”

The Capital Area Food Bank is sending an initial tractor trailer loaded with food, water, and baby supplies as soon as the Houston food bank is prepared to accept it. And for the next two weeks, CAFB will be collecting supplies for a second delivery in the middle of the month.

Those wishing to contribute can donate items to CAFB’s two warehouses (4900 Puerto Rico Ave. NE in the District and 6833 Hill Park Drive in Virginia) or at any Giant Foods store in the D.C. area from September 5-12. Here’s what they’re looking for

  • Ready-to-eat foods including nuts, granola bars, and other snacks
  • Shelf-stable pantry items such as peanut butter, tuna and soup
  • Bottled water
  • Cleaning supplies (bleach, non-bleach, paper towels, etc.)
  • Personal hygiene items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.)
  • Diapers and other baby items

People can also volunteer to help pack the truck and write notes to displaced residents. Shifts will be from September 14-16 and details will be online next week.
