A person who spent an extra dollar in Virginia to triple their lottery winnings to $3 million has yet to claim the prize.
Virginia Lottery spokesperson John Hagerty told DCist that someone bought a lottery ticket at a Giant grocery store in Sterling that matched the first five numbers of Tuesday’s $61 million Mega Millions drawing.
The winning numbers were 11-17-59-70-72, and the Mega Ball number was 1.
The person did not match the Mega Ball number, which means they would typically get a $1 million prize. However, the winner paid an extra dollar on the “Megaplier” feature, which tripled the money to $3 million. The unclaimed ticket was first reported by The Washington Post.
Lottery officials say that odds of getting the first five numbers is 1 in 18,492,204, and the Virginia winner was the only person to do so on Tuesday night. No one matched all six numbers so the jackpot is jumping to $70 million for the next drawing on Friday.
The Virginia winner has 180 days from the drawing to claim the $3 million prize money.
