An officer in a unmarked police cruiser fatally struck an elderly man on a motor scooter in Montgomery County.

The incident took place on Wednesday around 9:43 p.m in Wheaton, according to a release.

Detectives say that the 74-year-old man was operating a Sunra Motor Scooter and attempted to cross Veirs Mills Road near Norris Drive when he collided with an unmarked Montgomery County Police cruiser.

Police say that multiple witnesses stayed on the scene and provided them with information, but it’s still unclear how the crash happened.

The elderly man was taken to a local hospital where he died. The officer was not seriously injured. The case is still under investigation.
