A D.C. man was arrested after allegedly attempting to carjack a double-decker tour bus near the White House on Sunday night.
Tyler Jackson, 24, has been charged with simple assault, unarmed carjacking, resisting arrest, and failure to obey an officer after an incident at the intersection of 16th and H streets NW by Lafayette Square.
A D.C. police report says that the incident occurred on a BigBus Tour around 8 p.m. Fox 5 reports that almost 60 people were on the top deck and looking at the White House when Jackson allegedly began screaming at the driver, then ran onto the bus. The police report says the driver was hit during the act.
U.S. Secret Service was the first law enforcement agency on the scene, according to the police report, which says that the assisting officers were flagged down after an individual was removed from a tour bus.
The D.C. Superior Court affidavit states that concerned citizens flagged down the Secret Service officer, who observed a man later identified as Jackson being removed from the BigBus. Witnesses told the officer that the man had attacked the bus driver.
Court documents go on to say that the man did not follow multiple verbal commands from the officer, who was unable to handcuff the suspect. The officer called for back-up as a citizen helped him control the suspect’s feet until other officers arrived.
MPD directed all further inquiries to the Secret Service, which is the investigative agency on this case. Secret Service has not responded to a request for more information.
BigBus has not responded to our request for comment, but sent the following statement to Fox5:
We can confirm that the unfortunate event did happen during our night tour on Sunday evening. As expected the driver remains in a state of shock, but fortunately in good condition. We are incredibly appreciative of the quick response by the authorities. The safety of our team members and guests is incredibly important to us, our buses do include on-board cameras, and we will continue to work with the authorities as the investigation continues.
Per court documents, the driver was transported via ambulance to George Washington Hospital.
Updated with information from court documents.
