We’re number one, if you add 16 to that one!
Forbes, ever the arbiter of cool, has named Washington D.C. the 17th coolest city in the whole dang country. Thanks Forbes!
It’s a far cry from when we topped the list back in 2014, with the help of our “abundant entertainment and recreational options, an ethnically and culturally diverse population, and a big chunk of people age 20 to 34.”
The new ranking will come as a blow to D.C. officials, who’ve been relentlessly touting that number one slot ever since we got it. Mayor Muriel Bowser recently namechecked it in her pitch for Amazon’s new headquarters.
This go around, our strengths were our mass transit, diversity, and youth. Our weaknesses, according to Forbes, anyway, are our bars and clubs, and small business growth.
The magazine annually compiles its list with the help of Sperling’s BestPlaces, analyzing the 100 biggest metropolitan statiscal areas in the U.S. using nine metrics that are based on either lifestyle preferences or the “vitality of the population.”
Here’s who beat us out for slots one through 16:
1. San Francisco
2. Seattle
3. San Diego
4. New Orleans
5. Portland, Ore.
6. San Jose, Ca.
7. Los Angeles
8. New York
9. Boston
10. Denver
11. Charleston, SC
12. Honolulu
13. Austin, Tx.
14. Miami
15. Madison, Wisc.
16. Houston
