D.C. police say they have closed a case involving a college-bound teenager who was fatally shot in crossfire over the summer.

At a press conference on Friday, D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham announced the arrest of a second suspect, 18-year-old Robert Moses, in the killing of Jamahri Sydnor. He was charged with first degree murder while armed.

Sydnor was shot on August 10 while driving on the 1400 block of Saratoga Avenue NE and died two days later. Police arrested 21-year-old Philip McDaniel on the day of the shooting.

Officials say the two suspects were hiding behind bushes and opened fire at a crowd of people across the street. A stray bullet hit Syndnor, a 17-year-old who recently graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School where she was captain of the cheerleading squad, sang in the choir, and was a peer counselor. She was 10 days away from starting college in Florida.

When the news was reported, people were “particularly enraged,” said Newsham, adding that Syndor was “beloved in our community” and a leader at her school.

He said he hopes the two arrests give her family “some semblance of closure.”
