Looks like Metro followed through on its promise to deliver a special SmarTrip card for the Capitals if the team won the Stanley Cup.
The transit service pledged as much after players TJ Oshie and Matt Niskanen took the Metro to get to Gallery Place for both home games in the finals.
Holy Hockey! Look who was on my metro car!!! @TJOshie77 on his way to @CapitalOneArena! And Matt Niskanen, too! #ALLCAPS #StanleyCup #ThisIsASignFromTheHockeyGods @NoVa_Caps @russianmachine @Capitals @wmata pic.twitter.com/od8lEQ73YT

It was Oshie’s first time using MetroRail. “We heard it might be tough to get to the game,” Oshie explained after the third game. “So we decided to take the train, so if there was going to be any traffic, just to make it easier on us.”
Before Game Four, Oshie was 35 cents short on fare but Metro let him through anyway.
Metro says it generally reserves commemorative SmarTrips for inaugurations and other events of national significance. “This is the first time a commemorative SmarTrip card has marked the occasion of a D.C. sports championship,” WMATA says. That checks out, considering Metro rolled out SmarTrips in 1999 and D.C. hadn’t won a sports championship since 1992 until this year.
The card is available only at WMATA’s website and costs same as your standard SmarTrip: $10, which breaks down to $8 in fare and $2 for the card itself.
It’s unclear whether Oshie and Niskanen plan on taking Metro to today’s victory parade.
UPDATE: These are popular.
