Less than two weeks after helping to bring the Stanley Cup to Washington, Capitals Head Coach Barry Trotz has resigned.

The team released an official statement on their site Monday afternoon:

Barry Trotz informed the organization today of his decision to resign as head coach of the Washington Capitals. We are obviously disappointed by Barry’s decision, but would like to thank Barry for all his efforts the past four years and for helping bring the Stanley Cup to Washington. Barry is a man of high character and integrity and we are grateful for his leadership and for all that he has done for our franchise.

Barry Trotz also released his own statement:

In the last 40 years, there have only been four other coaches to win the Stanley Cup and elect not to come back to their teams.

In four years under Barry Trotz, the Capitals maintained the best record in the league. At the end of last season, the Capitals opted not to extend Trotz’s contract, which was set to end this year.

After this year’s win, Trotz appeared to want to come back, telling ESPN that “we’ll do it again,” and “we’ll get something done.” Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that there was a two-year extension on Trotz’s contract if he won a Stanley Cup, but the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement on the financial terms.
