The iconic English soccer star Wayne Rooney is closing in on a deal with D.C. United, according to ESPN. Several other outlets report that an announcement is imminent in the coming days.
The Everton striker has been with his current team for just the last 12 months and has a year left in his contract, but will reportedly leave in the middle.
Rooney leaves the Premier League for Major League Soccer as the all-time leading goalscorer for Manchester United and England. The Times reports that he will sign a two-and-a-half year deal with the D.C. team, and the 32-year-old is expected to be the highest-paid player in D.C. United history.
The BBC reported in May that Rooney had signed a “deal in principal” with the team.
Rooney’s apparent move comes just weeks before D.C. United is set to move into its new digs at Audi Field, meaning he would likely make his debut there.
