Metro announced that free Wi-Fi service will be available at all of its underground stations starting Friday, June 29. You can find it under the name “Metro-Public” on your phone or laptop.
Metro has been working on expanding its Wi-Fi service at all stations since the summer of 2017.
Work is still underway on the above-ground stations, according to Metro’s press release. The transit agency is also working on providing data and wireless service (though not free Wi-Fi) in the tunnels—currently, about one-third of Metro tunnels have service with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. The goal is to provide full service in every tunnel. Efforts have been ongoing on that front since 2016.
There’s also free public Wi-Fi provided by the city government at hotspots in each ward.
