More than a year after a Megabus crashed into a D.C. streetcar platform, the station is back up and running. The District Department of Transportation reopened the stop at 3rd and H streets NE on Tuesday after extensive renovations.

The bus was traveling east on H Street NE on April 26, 2017 when the operator lost control and hit the platform, completely demolishing the shelter. While streetcar service resumed within two hours, the station remained closed for 15 months as DDOT worked to rebuild the platform.

It took so long to repair in part because construction was taking place on the building behind the platform and because there was a delay in receiving the necessary parts, DDOT spokesman Terry Owens said via email.

The repairs were extensive. “To reopen the platform, Clear Channel had to install a new shelter. New connections were required for power (Pepco) and Nextbus had to be installed. Railings leading to the platform also had to be replaced. The edges of the platform had to be repaired as well,” he said.

DDOT also conducted a hazard analyses after the crash and made some changes to make it easier for drivers to see the platform.
