Erin Derosa has always been the kind of hair stylist who talks to her clients in the chair—like, really talks to them.
“Everybody jokes that I ask the questions that nobody would ask,” says Derosa, an alum of 14th Street’s Immortal Beloved salon. “You can get to the middle of what’s going on with someone, or you start talking a lot about someone’s lives [in the chair], it’s a very personal experience.”
At her brand-new “salon and healing studio” Sense, which opened early this month, Derosa combines her interests in styling and getting up close and personal. On the first floor of the blue rowhouse at 3111 Georgia Ave. NW, Derosa and her two fellow stylists will do hair coloring, cuts, and blowouts, while the second floor will be used for healing and wellness workshops.
Right now, Derosa is the only one manning the healing side of things: She specializes in breathwork, a kind of guided meditation that involves breathing in very specific patterns, with what some claim are therapeutic effects. Derosa, who’s received her training from the Maha Rose Center for Healing in New York, offers one-on-one sessions now, but hopes to expand with group sessions. Pricing for one session, which ranges in length from 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes, Derosa says, is $50.
Of course, it’s fairly easy to know when it’s time for a haircut. Derosa says that people can learn to know when they need some breathwork, too.
“In general, people don’t come for healing services without having a little intuitive inkling that they need something more for themselves,” she says. “It’s almost an internal body scrub. … If you’re feeling jammed up, if you’re feeling anxious, if you’re feeling more angry than usual: It’s to process those feelings.”
She’s planning to expand the healing studio’s offerings by September, adding meditation workshops first, followed by reiki healing, both administered by to-be-announced practitioners.
Downstairs, Derosa is joined by fellow former Immortal Beloved-ers, colorist Barbara Butler and stylist Mimi Craft, along with two assistants. Derosa says she hopes to hire a stylist who’s able to do men’s cuts soon.
Salon prices are comparable with Immortal Beloved—which is to say, pricey. A women’s haircut and blow-dry starts at $120; a blow-dry alone is $50. Full hair painting (also known as balayage—it’s kind of like highlights, but more intense) is $225; partial hair painting is $175.
In D.C., where Derosa says healing is “just on the brink of expanding” in popularity, she says she’d ideally like to see clients come in for a “one-stop, full-body type of thing,” such as a reiki session upstairs in the morning, followed by a stop downstairs at the salon. Don’t expect the two sides of Sense to overlap, too much, though.
“I think people have the idea that we’re lighting sage and pulling a tarot card when they come in to the salon,” Derosa says. “It’s not what everyone’s looking for and that’s ok. If people do want to talk about it, we’re really excited and happy to.”
Sense is located at 3111 Georgia Ave. NW. Hours are Tuesday-Wednesday 3 p.m.-8 p.m., Thursday 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
