We came so close to getting through the summer without making another Hamilton joke, but here goes: Patrons with tickets to Tuesday night’s performance of the hip-hop musical at the Kennedy Center will have to wait for it just a little longer, after an air conditioning malfunction forced the performance to be canceled. A Kennedy Center representative tells DCist that the mechanical failure has been fixed, and all of the center’s scheduled performances will go on Wednesday night as planned.

The Kennedy Center is adding a makeup performance on Sept. 13, at which all tickets will be honored, the theater tweeted. If ticketholders are unable to attend on that date, they will receive a full refund. Seats that are not claimed for that performance will go on sale to the general public at an unspecified time, a representative said.

The arts center tweeted shortly before 7 p.m. on Tuesday that a “building-wide cooling system failure” was to blame for the cancellation of the show, which was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday marked the 36th day of the year of temperatures at or above 90 degrees, and a heat advisory was in effect during the day.

The Kennedy Center’s Opera House, in which Hamiltonis staged, has a capacity of 2,364 patrons. A representative declined to comment on whether last night’s performance was sold out.

The Kennedy Center’s long-running comedy Shear Madness was also forced to cancel its performance, set to be its return engagement after a summer break.

Plenty of fans were left unsatisfied.

A few fans took a shot at hanging out with the cast, who were presumably left without plans on Tuesday night.

Hamilton has 21 regular performances left in its three-month run. The show closes on Sept. 16.
