It’s a good weekend to do all the stuff you love in D.C. totally for free: drink some beer, try a new workout, and just go dance.
Have a beer for the love of … beer
Did you know Friday is National Beer Lovers Day? Neither did we, but if there’s anyone we trust to have this day in their calendar, it’s the folks at Heurich House Museum, also known as the Brewmaster’s Castle. Head to the Dupont Circle mansion and celebrate the day with—what else?—a cold one on the house. You can also explore the museum’s collection, and check out the Art of Beer exhibit via a scavenger hunt. At the end, following in the hallowed tradition of alcohol-fueled-art, you can even design your own beer label.

Get down with your neighbors
Dance Place is throwing a good old-fashioned block party—with plenty of chances to groove, naturally. The day starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Brookland/Edgewood studio with a community cleanup, and continues with free dance classes for kids (adult dance classes are $5 each). Not too rhythmically inclined? There’ll also be games, face-painting, live music, balloon animals, and crafts.

Celebrate well
The festivals we know and love usually come with funnel cake, beer, or giant turkey legs. But Commit to be Fit, taking over Rhode Island Avenue on Saturday, is all about eating and doing things that don’t make you feel terrible afterward. Expect free classes in a variety of exercise types, including ballet, kettlebells, martial arts, cardio, and dance. Snacks from Smoothie King and Saffron Gourmet will be on hand, and children can play in the “fun kids corner.”
Rhode Island Row, Saturday, noon-4 p.m.
See all of the lights
Robin Bell’s projection art tends to make national news: He’s the artist who beams political messages onto the Trump International Hotel downtown. On Saturday, he’s making art for a very different cause. As part of the lead-up to the DC Public Library’s Banned Books Week, Bell will create art to adorn The Line hotel, all based on the theme of freedom to explore and learn through reading. Check out some art and get inspired to create your fall reading list (most DCPL locations open at 1 p.m. on Sundays).
The Line, Saturday, 8 p.m.-10 p.m.
Take a new look at the erotic
A new exhibit at the District of Columbia Arts Center wants to make art a lot more queer. In Queer(ing) Pleasure, five artists explore the ways erotic pleasure can be decidedly not white and hetero-centric. Works include performances, videos, photographs, sculptures, and embroidery. Get a first look at the exhibit at its opening reception Friday from 7 p.m.-9 p.m., or check it out during regular hours Wednesdays-Sundays.
