This Friday, 28 new mini parks will be added to the District. PARK(ing) Day, an annual, global event started in San Francisco in 2005, transforms parking spaces around the District into free mini public parks for one day.
This will be the sixth year that District Department of Transportation will allot permits for parking spots to organizations. In previous years, these spots have transformed into venues including free coffee stands, mini-golf courses, and an open-access dining table.
“We support parking day because it’s a way to celebrate public space and it’s an opportunity for residents, businesses and community groups to celebrate public space and enjoy a nice day outside and connect with their neighbors,” says Ted Van Houten, PARK(ing) Day manager for DDOT. “We hear overwhelmingly positive feedback from parking day every year.”
This year, multiple organizations will be taking over parking spaces, including the Association of American Medical Colleges, which is a new participant in the event. At its spot, the organization will provide information to residents about how they can apply to medical school.
Uptown Main Street is another newcomer to PARK(ing) Day. The organization, which focuses on the development of upper 14th and Kennedy streets NW, will offer games such as oversized Connect 4 and crafts including origami.
The NoMa Business Improvement District is supporting several PARK(ing) Day events around the District, like an active mindful garden on 1275 First St. NE with My Active Bodyworks. Noma BID has other sponsorships, including with Yoga NoMa on 1150 First St. NE.
Here are all the parks you can find tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
