Videos posted on social media Monday evening show a group of protesters confronting Senator Ted Cruz at Fiola, chanting “We believe survivors” until he leaves the Michelin-starred restaurant.

“Activists from Smash Racism DC, Resist This, DC IWW, members of DC Democratic Socialists of America, Anarchists, and members of the LGBTQ community interrupted Ted Cruz’s peaceful meal,” antifacist organization Smash Racism DC, which posted the videos, said in a statement. “While our interruption does not compare in scale to the interruptions his actions as a Senator have had on millions of American lives, we hope that it reminds Cruz and others like him that they are not safe from the people they have hurt.”

The protest centered on Brett Kavanaugh, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit judge nominated by President Donald Trump to serve on the Supreme Court.

In recent weeks, multiple allegations of sexual misconduct have emerged against him, including an assault in high school and indecent exposure in college, complicating what at first appeared to be an easy road to confirmation. He denies the allegations and will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, as will accuser Christine Blasey Ford.

Cruz sits on that committee.

“I’d love to talk with you about Brett Kavanaugh tonight,” a woman, who identifies as Cruz’s constituent, says in a video tweeted by Smash Racism DC. She asks Cruz how he plans to vote on the Kavanaugh nomination. “Senator, I have a right to know what your position is on Brett Kavanaugh.”

“God bless you, ma’am,” Cruz responds. The video shows his wife, Heidi, seated at their table and Cruz takes off his jacket and joins her.

The woman continues to address Cruz. “I’m a survivor of sexual assault,” she says. “There are now three people who have come forward and who have said that Brett Kavanaugh attacked them.” She presses him on how he plans to vote.

As the group keeps chanting “We believe survivors,” Cruz puts his jacket back on and motions to his wife for them to leave.

The video shows demonstrators continuing to chant “We believe survivors” as Ted and Heidi Cruz head towards the door.

One protester gets in Cruz’s face and screams “Beto is way hotter than you, dude,” referencing his opponent in a tightly contested Senate race. As demonstrators heckle him, he tells them to make room for his wife to leave.

Demonstrators cheer after the Cruzes leave the restaurant.

“Leave the premises,” someone says. “This is a private space.”

An email on Tuesday from Fiola’s ownership says that employees of the restaurant contacted law enforcement.

“We are trained at hospitality not public safety, and our highest priority is always the well-being of our customers,” the email reads. “Fiola welcomes all customers, Senator Cruz included. Naturally this incident was regrettable for us and we apologized to all customers who were impacted. We were placed in difficult circumstances when the protesters entered and our team responded as they were trained to do so by calling the police and trying to calm the situation.”

Fabio Trabocchi, the chef owner of Fiola, confirmed to DCist on Wednesday that Ted and Heidi Cruz returned to the restaurant after demonstrators left to eat their dinner.

In late June and early July, protesters took to demonstrating Trump administration officials where they dined and lived on a near-constant basis. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen faced protesters of the family separation policy at a Mexican restaurant and at her Alexandria home. Demonstrators also staged a protest outside the the luxury apartment complex where White House senior adviser Stephen Miller resides. A local teacher recorded her confrontation with then-Environmental Protection Agency Director Scott Pruitt at lunch.

Of late, that tactic hadn’t been seen as much in D.C. Until now.

“This is a message to Ted Cruz, Bret Kavanaugh, Donald Trump, and the rest of the racist, sexist, transphobic, and homophobic right-wing scum,” wrote Smash Racism DC in its statement. “You are not safe. We will find you. We will expose you. We will take from you the peace you have taken from so many others.”

But they may have a difficult time trying to protest again at Fiola, which has organized security for the next two weeks, according to the restaurant’s ownership.
