The repairs to the water main are almost complete, according to DC Water’s Twitter. The street will remain closed and crews are going out to repair the damage tomorrow.

A large sinkhole opened up on the 3500 block of 6th Street Southeast early Tuesday morning, closing the entire Congress Heights block until further notice.

The sinkhole was caused by a break in an 8-inch water main, according to the Washington Post. Officials said on Twitter that the water main will take eight to 10 hours to repair.

Videos of the sinkhole on Twitter show parked cars in danger of falling in, and a Metrobus struggling to avoid driving into it. You can hear people gasping as the bus wobbles trying to back up.

Metrobus has said that buses to Anacostia will be detoured due to the sinkhole.
