A gay nightclub in Northeast has apologized after one of its bouncers shoved former D.C. mayor and current Ward 7 councilmember Vincent Gray out the door over an issue with his identification card.

“We deeply regret that this situation escalated in the manner that it did and we appreciate and recognize the longstanding support and commitment Councilmember Vincent Gray has had for the LGBT community and the District as a whole,” the bar said in an emailed statement sent to news outlets on Monday evening. “The member of our security staff at the door that evening has only lived in the area for 4 months and [was] not familiar with Councilmember Gray’s service to the District. We will retrain all of our staff to ensure that a focus on customer service and de-escalation is adhered to.”

DC Eagle is located in Ward 7, and Gray planned to attend an event there associated with arts festival Art All Night, multiple news outlets reported.

According to press reports, the bouncer at the club refused to accept Gray’s councilmember ID card at the door because it doesn’t have a date of birth printed on it. The 75-year-old Gray asked the bouncer, “‘Don’t I look old enough?'” according to NBC Washington.

At some point during the disagreement, the bouncer pushed Gray out of the doorway of the establishment, and Gray lost his balance and fell, his chief of staff, Sheila Bunn, has told multiple outlets.

Gray demonstrated the push with an assist from NBC Washington’s Mark Segraves:

The councilmember called police after the incident. He was injured in the fall, but refused medical treatment on the scene, according to the incident report from the Metropolitan Police Department. The report classifies the incident as a simple assault.

Gray is reportedly considering pressing charges against the bouncer.

Before the DC Eagle’s apology on Monday night, the club provided this statement to NBC Washington on Sunday:

“Councilmember Gray did attempt to enter the DC Eagle last night, but refused to provide proper identification to our door staff after being asked for it several times, as required by D.C. law. He asked to see an owner and was told he would have to wait outside.”

On its website, the DC Eagle lists its policy on identification cards: “The DC Eagle only accepts government issued photo IDs for entry: Driver’s Licenses, Military IDs, or Passports. We do not accept college IDs, temporary paper ID’s, or photocopies, and we reserve the right to decline any ID that appears to be damaged, tampered with, or suspicion that it is a fake.”
