An adult man using a motorized wheelchair died on Wednesday afternoon after trying to exit the Columbia Heights Metro by escalator, Metro spokesperson Sherri Ly confirmed to DCist.
Ly says that the elevator in the station was in service at the time. Security footage in the station shows that the man pressed the button for the elevator, waited about 10 to 15 seconds, and then made his way over to the escalator. When he reached the top of the escalator around 1:30 p.m., the man fell backward and all the way down the escalator, critically injuring himself, Ly says.
Multiple bystanders and the station managers rendered aid to the man while D.C. Fire and EMS arrived. The man was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Reporter Martin Di Caro first reported the incident.
Officials have not released the man’s identity as they are in the process of notifying next of kin, Ly says.
