How far does Terrain Café take its garden theme? For starters (literally) the bread is served in a terra cotta flower pot.
The new restaurant, which opened Thursday at Bethesda Row, comes from the Anthropologie network, a national retailer known for its boho, globally inspired clothing and home goods.
The sun-drenched, window-heavy café could be confused for a greenhouse: Wild greens spill over huge concrete pots, air plants adorn every table, and a green wall sports exotic tropical plants. A weathered iron garden gate frames the kitchen entrance and copper pendant lights are accented with leaves.
The food, as you can probably guess, is also garden-inspired and veggie heavy. A majority of ingredients are sourced from local farms.
“We make vegetables exciting by using different methods in cooking and combining them with what’s going on in the season,” says head chef and Virginia native Kevin Ettenson, who has held stints at Mad Fox Brewing Co., Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar, and the Doubletree Hotel in Crystal City. “We try to go with combinations like sweet and earthy.”
Brunch, served daily, includes four fancy toasts ($11-$15) including roasted eggplant with pickled raisins as well as burrata with black garlic. Bowls also play a big part, including a $20 Harvest Bowl made with quinoa, kale falafel, vegetables and tahini vinaigrette, and a $25 farro and chicken bowl with kale, brussels sprouts and lemon yogurt. Dinner is available Wednesday through Sunday.
Though dishes veer healthy, there’s no lack of flavor. The kale salad is dialed up with marcona almonds, shallots, charred kohlrabi, and a heavy dose of poppy seed dressing that makes the kale look as though it was dragged through the dirt before it hit your plate.
A small bar, where takeout is available, serves a selection of wine and beer, as well as simple cocktails laced with fresh herbs. Coffee from Ceremony Coffee Roasters is available all day.
This marks the fifth location of Terrain Café, which first opened in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania and is attached to a sprawling plant shop called Terrain. The Bethesda café likewise has an adjoining Terrain, along with Anthropologie and BHLDN, the company’s wedding line.
The menu will rotate seasonally, and patio seating is available when weather allows. Though you’ll likely have a more pleasant experience dining inside among the 360-degree plants than amidst the concrete and bustle of Bethesda.
Terrain Café is located at 7228 Woodmont Ave., Bethesda. Brunch is served daily from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; midday menu available 3 p.m.-5 p.m.; dinner served Wednesday-Thursday and Sunday 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Friday-Saturday 5 p.m.-10 p.m.
