Hear Granny in a new venue
Eager funk fans squeeze into Showtime Lounge on Rhode Island Avenue each Sunday to see Granny and the Boys play the hits. On Friday, there’ll be more space to groove when the band headlines at One Eight Distilling for the latest in the bar’s District Made Friday Nights series. Qui Qui Catering will be serving up Asian-Caribbean eats. Like we said, people love Granny (and the band’s love story—did you know she and the band’s drummer are in love?) so we recommend registering.
One Eight Distilling, Friday, 8 p.m.-midnight

Wicked witches, find someplace to hide: After a year and a half off the display shelves at the National Museum of American History, the ruby slippers Judy Garland wore in The Wizard of Oz are headed home. The museum is marking the occasion with a two-day party, including lectures with the answers to all your burning questions about the 1939 musical. Get the scoop on how many pairs of kicks it took to film the movie (and learn about the time one of them was stolen) and the process it takes to keep them in pristine condition. Screenings of the movie will take place all weekend (for a fee), and costumes are encouraged.
National Museum of American History, Friday-Saturday, noon-3 p.m.
(Psst: Interested in even more Wizard of Oz? The National Theatre will host a children’s “interactive retelling” of the famous tale Saturday at 11 a.m. Register here)
Let the drummers kick
Take martial arts and add a little bit of dance, plus some percussion, and you’ve got capoeira, a Afro-Brazilian discipline practiced at several studios in the District. One of them, Abada-Capoeira DC, will take the stage at the Kennedy Center for this weekend’s Millennium Stage performance. (They offer classes, should you feel compelled to try it yourself.) They’ll do their thing alongside D.C. celebrities Batalá Washington, the all-female Afro-Brazilian drumming group that steals the show at each Funk Parade.
The Kennedy Center, Saturday, 6 p.m.
Get in the Diwali spirit
Each autumn, Hindu communities celebrate Diwali with sweets, henna, crafts, and a whole bunch of lights (it is the Festival of Lights, after all). On Saturday, the Science of Spirituality Meditation Center in Palisades is pulling out all the stops for its own Diwali celebration. Festivities include games, vegetarian bites, music, a henna competition, and meditation. Register in advance here.
Science of Spirituality Meditation Center, Saturday, 4 p.m.-9 p.m.
Meet some new green-thumbed friends
The Shay has seen its share of turnover, especially in the clothing department, but its newest business is hoping to put down some roots. Rewild, a new shop for plants, flowers, and classes for the care and keeping of both. Celebrate their launch at an opening party on Saturday, with music, refreshments, art installations, and botanical body painting (?).
Rewild, Saturday, 7 p.m.-9 p.m.
