Meet Margaret Norwood.
This 104-year-old woman voted in D.C.’s general election on November 6 at UDC Bertie Backus, according to a post from D.C. Mayor Bowser’s Instagram page. As Bowser’s post points out, when Norwood was born, women did not have the right to vote. The 19th amendment was passed in 1919 and ratified a year later.
Norwood was greeted by Bowser and Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, both incumbent Democrats who face nominal challenges on the ballot during this cycle.
According to LaToya Foster, the mayor’s spokesperson, Bowser and her team didn’t have any advanced notice that Norwood would be coming. Norwood told Bowser that she hoped the mayor lives to be 104, per Foster. You can see some of their interaction in the Instagram video below.
If you want to make like Norwood and vote, remember that D.C. polls are open until 8 p.m.
