Raise a glass to birthdays: Supra and Cotton & Reed are celebrating this week. There’s also festivals, plenty of beer, and more.
Half-priced Georgian birthday cocktails
Supra made a splash last year when it opened as D.C.’s first-ever Georgian restaurant, serving everything from khachapuri to catfish skewers. It’ll mark its first birthday with $6 Chacha Sours, a cocktail made with a traditional Georgian brandy. In addition to the weeklong special, dinner guests on Thursday will score a complimentary glass of Georgian sparkling wine. (1205 11th St. NW, November 8-15, $6 and up)
Tour the world of aquavit
Scandinavia’s signature booze is the star of the seventh annual National Aquavit Week, a tour of tastings and events across the country. Start the weekend at Mikko in Dupont Circle exploring the spirit with special aquavit cocktails at happy hour prices. Regular Nordic bites from the Mikko kitchen will be available. Representatives from several aquavit brands—including Linie, Aalborg, and Vikre—will be on hand to answer questions and offer complimentary samples. (1636 R St. NW, Friday, 5 p.m.-8 p.m., free entry).
A unique local food market
Browse, shop and taste through the Emporiyum food market this Saturday and Sunday at Union Market. General admission tickets include samples as well as other food and gifts available for purchase. Many of the merchants and cooks will be on-site themselves to answer questions and present their products. (1309 5th St. NE, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., $15-$40 per day).
Cask ales with Mad Fox
Head out this weekend to the region’s premier cask ale festival at Mad Fox Brewing in Falls Church. Offerings at this yearly event include more than 30 cask-conditioned beers from around the U.S. in addition to food and live entertainment. Half pints and four-ounce pours of these naturally carbonated beers will be sold on site. Advanced admission of four samples and a bar snack can be purchased online. (444 W. Broad St., Falls Church, Saturday-Sunday, $3 and up)
Two years of D.C. rum
Raise a toast to two years of District-made rum at Cotton & Reed this Sunday. The distillery will celebrate by re-releasing its Spice As Nice rum, a warm and complex expression with characteristics similar to its Dry Spiced rum and Allspice dram. The recipe includes twenty botanicals and is rested for one year in used bourbon barrels from D.C.’s One-Eight Distilling. The bar will be mixing up special cocktails on Sunday and will have a limited run of 500 bottles for purchase. (1330 5th St. NE, Sunday, noon-2 a.m., a la carte)
Sommelier book signing
Join the joys of wine and literature next week with award-winning author Jordan Mackay and sommelier Rajat Parr as they discuss their new book, “The Sommeliers Atlas of Taste.” The book explores wines throughout regions of Europe. Flight wine bar will play host to the evening of stories, hors d’oeuvres, a meet-and-greet, and wine pours. Admission also includes a signed copy of the book, and an a la carte late-night happy hour will follow. (777 6th St. NW, Tuesday, 8 p.m., $75 per person)
