This year, New Year’s Eve is a Monday, meaning that Metro would normally only stay open until 11:30 p.m.

But General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said the transit agency wanted to give people a safe way home, so the system will stay keep ferrying riders until 2 a.m.

Last train times vary by station, so check a station’s webpage for last train times and then add two and a half hours for the last train on New Year’s Eve.

On New Year’s Day, Metrorail will open at 8 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. with trains operating on Sunday/holiday schedule.

Metro slashed late-night service in 2016 to give more time to overnight maintenance work. The system used to close at 3 a.m. on weekends and midnight on weeknights.

But the transit agency has still made a practice of staying open late on New Year’s Eve — last year, Metrorail stayed open until 2 a.m.

In 2015 and 2016, Miller Lite paid the fare for riders from midnight to 3 a.m.
