On Wednesday, the White House will hold its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on the ellipse at President’s Park. It’s a nearly 100-year tradition that involves schlepping a big tree from one the country’s national forests and driving it back to D.C., then holding a lighting ceremony in front of the White House that includes various musical performances (you can see the 2018 performers here). This year, the giant noble fir was taken from the Willamette National Forest in Oregon, and made about 20 stops in communities across the country along the way, according to the Washington Post.

Back in Washington, residents should prepare for some street closures downtown. Here’s a list of closures from the Metropolitan Police Department:

On Wednesday, November 28, 2018 the following streets will be closed from approximately 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.:

  • 17th Street, NW between Pennsylvania Avenue and Constitution Avenue, NW
  • C Street, NW between 17th and 18th Street, NW
  • D Street, NW between 17th and 18th Street, NW
  • E Street, NW between 17th and 18th Street, NW
  • F Street, NW between 17th and 18th Street, NW
  • G Street, NW between 17th and 18th Street, NW
  • New York Avenue between 17th and 18th Street, NW

On Wednesday, November 28, 2018, the following streets will be closed from approximately 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.:

  • Constitution Avenue, NW between 18th Street and 14th Street, NW
  • 15th Street between H Street, NW and Madison Drive, NW (Traffic will still be allowed to flow south on 15th Street from Madison Drive)
  • 17th Street between Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue, SW
  • Pennsylvania Avenue, NW between 14th Street and 15th Street, NW
  • E Street, NW between 14th Street and 15th Street, NW
  • F Street, NW between 14th  Street and 15th Street, NW
  • G Street, NW between 14th Street and 15th Street, NW
  • New York Avenue, NW between 14th Street and 15th Street, NW

Tickets for the lighting ceremony are free, but they’re distributed via a lottery that already happened in October.
