Find a new favorite place to catch art.
Sense, the salon and healing studio in Park View, has added a gallery. Ring in the new space on Friday at the opening of its new show, Eyes Open. The show includes feminist prints and art from Rose Jaffe, angular sculpture from Jordan Hamlett Sanders, textured, colorful collages from Stephen Whiteside, and pop portraits from Ann Gill.
Sense Gallery DC, Friday, 7 p.m.-9 p.m.
Un Samedi amusant
Turn your kids into petits enfants with a second language at the Alliance Française’s open house. It’s like a mini version of the school’s pricey classes and camps: There’s storytime with a Madeline book, a singalong of traditional French songs (“Frère Jacques” is definitely on that setlist), and a chance to sit in on a class that’s probably a lot less lonely than completing another Duolingo lesson.
Alliance Française, Saturday, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., register here.
Take selfies with Santa
It’s crazy how Santa Claus manages to fit so many D.C. visits in during his busiest season. The big guy is holding court and available for selfies at the Anacostia Arts Center on Saturday, during a free day of holiday fun that includes juggling elves, crafts, and snacks. Wicked Uncle will be giving Santa the day off and distributing toys while supplies last.
Anacostia Arts Center, Saturday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., register here.
Watch an outer space dance
The space race is serving as serious inspiration for art this year, including at this weekend’s performance We Choose to Go to the Moon, a dance piece inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 “… not because they are easy, but because they are hard” speech. D.C.’s Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company developed the piece in collaboration with NASA (could it mean pirouettes in zero gravity?) to mark the closure of the National Portrait Gallery’s exhibit exploring the happenings of 1968.
National Portrait Gallery, Saturday, 6:30 p.m., also Tuesday, register here.
Go from workout to beer in record time
Give your Fitbit—oh yeah, and your body too—a workout at this month’s exercise session from the fitness tracker company at DC Brau. The yoga-plus-bootcamp class ends with a chance to win a Fitbit of your own, and a free beer for the first 75 to arrive.
DC Brau, Sunday, 10 a.m., register here.
