With traffic fatalities climbing for the past several years in a row, the District’s Department of Transportation is changing the way that drivers make turns at dozens of intersections around the city in an effort to improve safety for pedestrians.

The agency will bar drivers from making right turns at red lights at about 100 intersections, including much of downtown. Signs will go up following a public comment period that ends in early February; DDOT expects to complete installation by July.

The agency is also adding infrastructure to reduce speeds when making left turns at five intersections. Over the next two years, the plan is to introduce such measures at 85 intersections.

“These locations were selected using data and recognized best practices to yield the greatest safety improvements,” DDOT Director Jeff Marootian said in a statement earlier this month.

Traffic deaths were up 13 percent from last year, despite Mayor Muriel Bowser’s pledge to cut that number to zero by 2024.  In October, Bowser announced plans to lower some residential speed limits and construct new bike lanes more quickly.

Here are the intersections where turning right on red, which was legalized in the mid-1970s amid the oil crisis, will soon be barred.
