Admit you love young adult novels
Books may be labeled “young adult,” but that doesn’t mean the only readers who devour them and their many sequels are in their teens. At the monthly W(h)ine & Angst reading series, young adult enthusiasts who are old enough to have to start thinking about 401(k)s gather to discuss young adult books. This month’s entry is The Love Interest, Cale Dietrich’s debut novel about an organization of teenage spies. As the event’s name suggests, wine will be available.
East City Bookshop, Friday, 6:30 p.m.
Feel the music all around D.C.
Usually classical music concerts are found in places with mezzanine and orchestra levels and where you’re supposed to wear uncomfortable fancy shoes. This weekend, though, you’ll find symphony performances in churches, libraries, and bars as the annual NSO in Your Neighborhood series of pop-up concerts concludes. This year’s series is taking place in spots around Shaw, U Street, and Columbia Heights. Among the thirteen offerings this weekend, Saturday morning’s show at the Mount Pleasant Library is tailored to children; that afternoon’s chamber concert at Wonderland Ballroom is a setlist of popular and classical songs; and Sunday’s show at the African American Civil War Memorial Museum integrates music with the museum’s exhibits. Shoes of any comfort level are welcome.
Various locations, through Monday, full schedule here.
Find something beautiful to look at
We may be without the Hirshhorn, the Renwick Gallery, and the American Art Museum right now, but that doesn’t mean there’s nowhere to find vibrant, colorful art. Case in point: The Korean Cultural Center’s newest exhibit is all about bojagi, a form of textile art made of bold silk squares. Explore the history of the tradition, along with the ways bojagi has influenced contemporary Korean art and design, throughout the exhibit’s run, or at an opening this weekend.
Korean Cultural Center, exhibit runs Friday-Feb. 22, opening reception Friday, 6 p.m., RSVP here.
Embrace your rock and roll dreams
Find out once and for all if you have the music in you, or if your kid is a secret prodigy: Levine Music is throwing open its doors for an open house this weekend, with a packed schedule of musical events. There are demonstrations for children and adults about the basics of drumming, music therapy, and mastering the ukulele, along with interactive workshops for musical theater dance, among other subjects. Parents, go ahead and put the 2 p.m. choral concert and wine tasting in your calendar.
Levine School of Music, Sunday, 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
Find some much-needed inner peace
If your New Year’s Resolution was to meditate more, get in shape, or finally learn what a sound bath is, the Eaton hotel’s new wellness center is here for you. This weekend’s grand opening is a chance to take advantage of all the good vibes without forking over a class fee: Sessions on tai chi and mindfulness are still open, as is the wellness center’s open house, featuring DJs, tea, juice, and snacks, and a tote bag with crystals and smudge sticks.
Eaton DC, Friday-Sunday, register here.
