The federal government shutdown has now worn on for 21 days, and it is on the precipice of becoming the longest shutdown in history. Government employees officially missed their first paycheck on Friday, while contractors have been working without pay (or simply not working) for the previous three weeks. People are worried about losing their housing and letting bills go unpaid.

This weekend, the Capital Area Food Bank is aiming to ease some of the burden for area families affected by the shutdown. The organization, which works to stem hunger and undernutrition in D.C., is setting up five different grocery pop ups outside different Giant locations around the city on Saturday. Government employees and contract workers can stop by to pick up free produce and non-perishables at any time from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Up to 250 people with federal I.D.s can get free groceries at each location.

The pop ups will be outside the following Giant locations:

  • Brentwood store (DC), 1050 Brentwood Road Brentwood, Washington, D.C.
  • Richmond Highway (VA), 6800 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, Va.
  • Campus Way South (MD), 10480 Campus Way South, Largo, Md.
  • Allentown Rd (MD), 7074 Allentown Rd, Camp Springs, Md.
  • Rockville Pike (MD), 12051 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Md.

Several restaurants around the city are also offering discounts and freebies for furloughed workers; you can see those here.
