The Virginia Senate approved a multimillion dollar incentives package for Amazon in a 35-5 vote on Monday. It now moves to the House of Delegates, where it is expected to pass easily.

The package approves up to $750 million in grants for the online retailer as long as it creates about 38,000 high-paying jobs (paying at least $150,000 annually) through 2034. The deal is key to Amazon’s plans to open a corporate campus in Arlington County this year.

Now lawmakers in the House of Delegates will consider the package — over objections from left-leaning activists and some Virginia Republicans, who have called the grants corporate welfare. Critics include Sen. David Suetterlein (R-Roanoke County), who voted against the grants, calling them “not a good use of tax dollars at all.”

The Arlington County Board is expected to vote on its own incentives agreement for Amazon in the coming weeks, though not before its February meeting, according to a spokesperson.

The Virginia Senate approved grant payments to the company on the same day it rejected a proposal to raise the state’s minimum wage.
