A chunk of pavement on 17th Street NW crumbled in on itself Tuesday afternoon, resulting in a sinkhole near the White House (you can imagine the Twitter commentary). As crews try to repair the damage, they’ve dug it out further into an apocalyptic-looking hole. And the work is looking complicated: DC Water said in a statement that it will take up to a week or more to complete.
Until then, 17th Street NW will be closed between C and E Streets NW, and D Street NW will also be closed between 15th and 17th Streets NW.
When the pavement suddenly went concave, large pieces of it crushed part of a water sewer underneath, according to DC Water. Crews are shoring a trench right now to try to expose the sewer and begin repairing it. The affected Pepco lines have been turned off, as well.
DC Water says it will provide updates on the repairs and the road closures. Once the sewer is fixed, Pepco will restore power and the roads can be reopened
